Chase Pflughaupt was born and raised in Iowa, primarily residing in the central region of the state for most of his life. At an early age Chase had an interest in motorsports, initially riding and racing motocross from the age of 5 to 10 years old. During his motorsports hiatus he remained an avid fan of multiple racing disciplines, especially open wheel racing. At the age of 21, Chase and his father Troy, now CT Motorsports Team Manager, purchased a couple of go-karts to go racing as a hobby. Two months later this hobby morphed into a full-fledged racing operation for the two and began what is now CT Motorsports. In only two years, Chase has established himself as a front runner in road races all over the country against drivers who have raced karts since their early childhood.
Since he began racing in 2017, Chase has recorded 19 career victories, with 10 of those victories coming in 2018 alone. Chase has captured wins in a variety of classes such as: CIK 125cc Shifter, Stock Honda Shifter and CIK LO206. His experience and success have positioned him as a leading contender when he arrives in the pit area of every track he competes at. In 2017, Chase began traveling and competing in numerous series and events around the country including the K.A.R.T. Series, World Karting Association, Championship EnduroSeries, Daytona Kart Week and the Rock Island Grand Prix.
Starting three rounds in to the 2017 K.A.R.T. series, Chase and the team made their debut at the Lake Garnett Road Race in early June racing the 125cc Shifter class. Remarkably, they came home with a 3rd and 4th place finish in their first race weekend in kart racing. They followed the series to Oklahoma where racing resumed at the famed Hallett Motor Racing Circuit. Despite increased competition, Chase and the team placed 5th in both Saturday and Sunday shifter competitions. The series next stop was at the nationally recognized Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, Kansas. They encountered their first rough weekend as motor issues due to the hot summertime temperatures resulted in a double DNF for the weekend. The team then took on the legendary Rock Island Grand Prix a few weekends later and raced against some of the best drivers in the nation. Leading up to the Sunday finale, Chase and the team were searching for both speed and comfortability, when shortly after posting his personal best lap time, Chase and the kart made a 55-mph impact into the turn 4 wall. Chase escaped the accident with minor injuries, but the kart itself was not so lucky as the frame was cracked and unusable. Determined to not give up, the team purchased two Parolin shifter kart chassis and went back to compete the next weekend. The Lake Afton road race in Wichita, Kansas was next up and was a special weekend for the team, as they were able to pick up their first victory during the Sunday event. With momentum heading into the season finale at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit, the team was eager to continue their success. Regrettably, the team encountered catastrophic motor failure three times in a row during the Saturday morning practice, causing them to retire from the event, and bring a close to their first season.
Optimistic after the previous season’s success, despite little knowledge about tuning and driving, the team committed to racing a full season with the K.A.R.T. series. The team also invested in a LO206 kart and motor package for Chase as another opportunity for him to further develop his driving abilities. The series kicked off at the Lake Afton road race and Chase placed 3rd on both Saturday and Sunday while also gaining much needed experience leading the pack. Lake Garnett was the next stop on the calendar for the team and also was their debut in the CIK LO206 class. Chase captured his second win in the shifter class on Sunday and gained experience running in the LO206 class. Unfortunately, rough track conditions combined with the aggressive nature of piloting a shifter kart, resulted in fractured ribs for Chase during that weekend that he had to push through, not only Sunday, but the rest of the season. Hallett Motor Racing Circuit was the next stop, which was host to the K.A.R.T. National Championship. The aggressive high-speed corners on the circuit tested Chases toughness and will all weekend long due to the injuries sustained at the previous event. Chase and the team came home with a 4th, 5th and 5th place finishes in the shifter classes at the National event as well as a remarkable 7thplace come from behind finish from 37thplace in the LO206 class. The team traveled to Heartland Motorsports Park next for the K.A.R.T./WKA Summer Sizzler. Chase showed remarkable pace running in 2nd place all race on Saturday in the 125cc Shifter race until a collision with a lapped kart two corners from the finish ended their efforts with a DNF. Chase and the team did however pull off a perfect weekend sweep in the LO206 class. The season moved onto Lake Afton and Lake Garnett again for the next two rounds. Going into Sunday the team was riding an eight-race win streak in the 125cc Shifter and LO206 classes combined. The Sunday shifter race didn’t start off on the right foot and found Chase in last place off the start. Pushing hard and catching the leaders, he made a pass for position but at the same time hit a rough bump that upset the kart at 100 mph. Chase and the kart made contact with the guardrail and caused him to be ejected and catapulted over the guardrail and 30 foot into a ravine. Miraculously Chase escaped the accident with minor injuries despite the spectacular accident. With a much-needed month break in the schedule, the team and Chase took advantage to recover and fix their equipment for the WKA Grand Nationals at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Chase and the team were able to seal both points championships that weekend in the 125cc Shifter class, as well as achieve a 2ndplace finish on Saturday and a win on Sunday in the LO206 class. That race win gave Chase and the team their first National Championship win and earned them the prestigious “Eagle” trophy.
Chase and the CTM team decided to make a change for the 2019 season, moving to the Championship Enduro Series after the season opener at Lake Afton. Their first Championship Enduro Series event was at World Wide Technology Raceway near St. Louis, Missouri, which was unfortunately rained out for the entire weekend. Next up was Blackhawk Farms Raceway, where the team pulled off a win in the 125cc Shifter class paired with two wins in the LO206 class and matching 3rd place finishes in the Stock Honda Shifter class. The team then traveled to the world-famous Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to compete against drivers from all around the world. Despite another unfortunate weekend with bad weather, Chase got a win in the LO206 class. The season continued on to Grattan Raceway, Heartland Motorsports Park and GingermanRaceway, where Chase and the team fought hard through some mechanical and on-track adversity but maintained poised to position themselves at the front of the championship battles. Chase and the team made an appearance at the K.A.R.T. Nationals at World Wide Technology Raceway in St. Louis prior to their season finale at NCM Motorsports Park. Chase and the team put in a near perfect weekend sweeping both National Championships in the 125cc Shifter Class. The series finale at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, KY challenged Chase and the team with cold temperatures all weekend long, but they were still able to manage 2nd in the Stock Honda championship, and win the 125cc Open Shifter championship their first year in the series.
To start the new season the team made the investment into a new chassis to help them maintain and elevate their position at the front of the field. The first event of the 2020 season was held at Daytona International Speedway, where the weather was not very kind and kept Chase and the team off track a majority of the weekend. With only one race day to show what they can do, they attempted to make the most of it. After leading multiple laps in the 125cc Open Shifter race, Chase came up just .020 seconds short from achieving victory. Next up for the team is Charlotte Motor Speedway’s ROVAL in April where they are eager to redeem themselves with a finish on the top step of the podium.
